Journey to the East – Personal Work Update

For the past two weeks, our group has been working corporately on sorting and mapping two Carleton students’, Domke’s and Caton’s, travels in Sichuan during the years 1938 – 1939.

We first looked at a collection of letters written by Domke during his visit in Sichuan, and we linked certain parts of the letters to relevant photos in order to create a narration of their travels. This task was divided equally among the three of us. I was responsible of looking through Domke’s letter written in mid-October. He mainly described his arrival at Chongqing and Chengdu, his trip to Mount Emei, and his visit to the Huaxi University. The letter reading and the photo choosing process took us around a week.

Then we started mapping out their travels in ArcGIS. We worked as a group during this process and it took us around four days to complete the mapping.

We plan to use StoryMaps to create a nice presentation of the map and the corresponding letters and photos. We will continue to working as a team, and I will continue to be responsible of the narration of their journey mentioned in the letters written by Domke in mid-October.
